3 Easy Home Remedies for Cats Transcript:
My favourite, absolute favourite home remedy is pumpkin, plain, canned pumpkin. Delicious and yeah I know, cats will actually eat this, it always boggles my mind when they do. Pumpkin is great for diarrhea, it’s a really nice source of fibre, so it just soaks up all that extra juice and just helps firm the stool up. It’s also a really good treatment for constipation. It works the same way except instead of soaking up extra juice in their intestines it brings extra water in there and acts as a really nice, natural stool softener. Now don’t use this if you’re not sure why they’ve had the diarrhea or if they’ve had the diarrhea for more than a couple of days, go to your vet. But if it’s just a day of soft stool, it’s a great thing to try.
Now hairballs, delicious, fun hairballs. We’re actually starting to learn that hairballs may not be as natural as we think they are and they may actually be a sign that your cat has a little bit of inflammatory bowel disease. But a lot of people still like to give their cats hairball laxatives. Now you may not have known this, but the hairball laxatives on the market are basically just petroleum jelly, petroleum jelly with a little bit of flavouring. You may also be surprised to hear this, cats will eat plain petroleum jelly absolutely fine. If they’re not super thrilled about eating it, just kind of smear it on their nose or on their paw and they’ll usually lick it off for you. Nice convenient stuff.
Cats also have a lot of upper respiratory infections and a lot of issues with conjunctivitis and other eye problems. Usually they need to be treated with antibiotics, but they’re still a little bit sore even with that and one really effective treatment is using a cold, used tea bag. Camomile seems to work the best for them and you need a really cooperative cat, but you basically just sit there, pet them and just hold the tea bag on their eye as a compress maybe for a couple of minutes or as long as your cat will let you do it. Do that about twice a day and it should give them a lot of relief, really nice stuff.
