Healthy and Safe Fruit & Vegetables that you can Feed your Dog

Fresh fruit and vegetables are easily one of the healthiest treats you can give your dog. They can also act as a simple way of supplementing your dog’s canned or kibble diet based diet. Dogs are omnivores and will often eat fruit they find in the wild. We have compiled a list of the common Safe Fruit and Vegetable for dogs, that you can use to supplement their diet or give them as an occasional treat.

Safe Fruit and Vegetable for Dogs

Only introduce one new food every week so.  Even though these are  safe fruit and vegetables for dogs, they can still cause an upset stomache. By introducing one new food every week, this makes it much easier for you to figure out what does and doesn’t agree with your pet. Fruit and veggies are a great option for making sure your dog is getting enough variety in their meals, but remember, fresh fruit and vegetables should not completely replace your pet’s food!

Apple

Apples are a good source of fiber, Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Remember to remove all Seeds! Apple seeds are poisonous to animals, so please to certain to remove them. The Apple core is also a choking hazard. The best things you can do for them is cut it into slices.


Banana

It should go without saying, but don’t feed them the Banana peel. Bananas are high in fiber, magnesium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and biotin. Bananas are high in sugar, so they should only be fed as an occasional treat.


Blueberries

Blueberries are high in fiber, contain high amounts of vitamin C, and antioxidants. Vitamin C and fiber are vital components of proper canine nutrition, so that makes blueberries a great treat to give them.


Cantaloupe

Cantaloupes have tons of nutrients for your dog, and can be a great treat on a hot summer day. The seeds are small enough that they aren’t a choking hazard either.

 


Mango

Orange

Oranges are a great source of Vitamin C & Fiber, but can cause some gastrointestinal issues in larger quantities.

 


Pear

Pineapple

Raw pineapple is a great and healthy treat for your dog.  Frozen pineapple also makes a great summer treat. Always avoid canned pineapple! The sugars in the syrup or most canned pineapple can be very unhealthy for your pet.

 


Raspberries

In small quantities, Raspberries can be a great occasional treat for your dog. Avoid feeding your pet more than 2-3 pieces of raspberry once a week or so. Too much of this fruit can result in some stomach issues.


Strawberries

Watermelon

Another great treat or supplement to their diet. Bell Peppers, such as Yellow, Green & Red may give your dog gas, so be careful! Introduce one type at a time to see how they react.

 


Broccoli

Consider boiling or steaming. This may be easier to digest. Most dogs prefer the stalks over the florets.

 

 


Cauliflower

Green beans

Spinach

Pumpkin

Never feed your dog onions or garlic!

These can destroy your dogs’ red blood cells and require a blood transfusion to prevent death!
Don’t be alarmed if you see chunks of vegetables in your dog’s poop. Since they are gulpers rather than chewers, dogs don’t always digest things efficiently.

Never Feed your Dog Grapes or Raisins!

This is a VERY unsafe food that can result in kidney failure and death!

These are the common Safe Fruit and Vegetable for dogs, remember only introduce one of these every weeks or so to rule out any stomache issues your dog may have.
